The Flu Vaccine And Obesity

I just saw an interesting New York Times article this morning- Study Suggests Obesity Hinders Flu Vaccine.  Eleven months after receiving the vaccine, over half of the obese patients in the study had a decrease in antibodies.  Only a quarter of non-obese participants.had this decrease.  The study also showed that white blood cells (which help fight the flu infection) decrease as BMI increases.  As obesity-focused research expands, we are going to continue to see more and more obesity-related complications popping up!

Because throwing up can be so dangerous for bansters, I have considered being vaccinated against the flu this year but have yet to do so.  Do many of you get vaccinated?  Do your doctors suggest it?

Being a practice nurse I get vaccinated every year,if you have ever had the real flu, it knocks you out for at least a week.I encourage all our patients to get it,ours has the swine flu in it as well. I also use public transport and everyone is always coughing and spluttering(also on planes) :)

I am a Dental Hygienist and you would be amazed how many people come to their dental appointments when violently ill. I try to get one every year (esp. since the year I failed to do so I actually got the flu). I have been fortunate to work for employers that bring someone to the office to provide the vaccines-- it just makes it very convenient.

I don't normally get a flu vaccine although I think it was more due to an extreme dislike of doctors (and having them associate every sickness I have ever had to being overweight). I did get one last year while I was in the hospital after being banded - I had to stay overnight and since they were already sticking me, I figured why not. I honestly haven't decided on whether or not to get it this year...

I do try to get a flu shot, but some years I don't get a chance. The real flu doesn't usually cause vomiting, though. That's a stomach virus for which the vaccine won't be of any help. The flu that is covered has symptoms like body aches, fever, chills, and extreme fatigue.

As an emergency medical provider, yes, I get the flu vaccine each year. I also was going to say what Melissa mentioned; the flu that the vaccine protects against has nothing to do with stomach ailments.

I used to never get the shot but I have for the past two years now. No issues.

One year I didn't get the shot and I was horribly ill. I have gotten it every year since. I am also lucky that my job provides them. Regardless if it vaccinates against the type of flu where you throw up it is still worth getting!

Interesting article! I never get the flu vaccine, but I don't have kids and work at home so I don't have as many chances to get it.

I usually get the flu vaccine... I've had the real flu maybe 5 times in my life, and it's NOT fun. They give them away over here like it's running out of style, so why not take advantage? :)
